August News

July was a fun filled month.  Our Center Coordinator Kristen got married, hence the last name change.  We had two successful Bingos; one was our special bingo to benefit the Rocky Ridge Progressive 4H Club in which we were able to donate $328.15. A special thank you to the 4H club for freshening up our flower beds out in front of the center.  There were many card and dice games played, lots of food shared and coffee and tea drank. Most of all time spent together with lots of laughter.

We have a donation box in the entry way for old glasses.  They can be prescription, readers or sunglasses.  Also, old hearing aids.  This is a recycle box for Lions Club International.  If you have any old, broken glasses that you don’t know what to do with, bring them by here. Also, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware that if you need a walker, canes, wheelchair we have them available to use.

I would like to again invite you to coffee on Tuesdays at 10; this is a time for us to get to know one another enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet treat. We have about 6-8 people who come out for a cuppa and a visit.  Yoga on Monday’s and Zumba on Friday’s are still going strong.  Plan on coming out and exercising with us.

We have asked our seniors what activities they would like at the Center.  As a response to our senior’s responses, we will offer a balance and strength exercise session daily, Monday-Thursday beginning Monday August 1st at 11:15 until 11:45. Ruth Heaney will be the leader and the sessions are free. You can come once a week or every day.  Each session will consist of different exercises to improve senior’s strength and balance.  Equipment used is a chair, comfy shoes and your energy, no sweat that’s it!  There is no need for you to call ahead just show up and have some fun.

We have Bunko on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 1:00 and Farkle on the 4th Thursday at 1:00 please call the center to sign up. We are always looking for more players. They always are laughing and having a good time. We also are having Bridge on every 2nd and 4th Tuesday and Wednesday if you are a current player or would like to be a sub contact me and I will get you in touch with whom you need to speak to.  We will be having our monthly fundraiser at Roy Roger’s on August 11th, 2022 from 5 -8 pm. Come out and see us and get some delicious food as well as our phenomenal goodies. We would like to say a special THANK YOU to Roy Rogers for being so supportive of our monthly bake sale.  We have been able to raise quite a bit of money from this fundraiser and we couldn’t do it without them. We will be celebrating birthdays on Thursday August 18th with special music from Patty and Brent Progecene

Are there any games you would like to see?  Maybe Dominoes, Cribbage, UNO. I am always up to try something new?  Is there a favorite game you and a group like to play? Come to the center and play, it is a great way to get out of the house and surround yourself with others. You are never too old to make new friends.

Remember we have delicious lunches served every day at 12:00.  We are so grateful to be getting meals from several locations in Thurmont. We would like to thank Mountain Gate, Kountry Kitchen, Rocky’s, Fratelli’s, and Bollinger’s for partnering with us. The meals are $6.00 each. We would love to share a meal with you.  Please call the day before to sign up for lunch.  Menus are at the center and online on Facebook and our website thurmontseniorcenter.org.  Don’t forget the Thurmont Senior Center is available to rent for different activities such as a baby shower, a birthday party or a bridal shower.

As always if you have questions don’t hesitate to call us at 301-271-7911.

Just a reminder some activities may have a minimal cost but to join the center is absolutely free.
