• December 2021 Senior Moments

    By Teresa Kempisty

“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening.  In the lane, snow is glistening” are you ready??  Those were the good ole days when horse drawn sleighs with leather strapped bells adorned the horses that pulled them.  The holidays are just around the corner and so is “old man winter”, but we have been treated to some delightfully mild weather this fall.  I have traveled this fall to western Maryland, Virginia & West Virginia, but nowhere did I see more beautiful colors than on our own Catoctin Mountains and driving west on Rt. 77.

For the holidays, why not come in on Tuesdays at 11:00 and sing Christmas songs accompanied by Ruth on the piano?  You could stay for lunch afterward and catch up with friends.  Just let Teresa or Ruth know by the day before so we can include you in the lunch order.

After that if you are not yet in the Christmas spirit, come in on Monday, Dec. 13, from 2:00-3:00 for a free live performance of Christmas music by Patty & Brent Progecene from Graceham.  She sings and he plays the guitar, blending their talents so well.  We will have some light refreshments beforehand starting at 1:00.

Don’t forget about our Bingo games on Dec. 1st  and 15th.  You never know when Santa’s reindeer might just pop in for a visit. When you check in with Irene Matthews and Joan Follin to buy Bingo cards, please thank them for the great job they do keeping records, counting out money and winnings and having everything ready & organized for you to play.  We couldn’t do it without them!  They make it look easy, but it is not.

Our famous bake sale and fundraiser night (always the 2nd Thursday of the month) at Roy Rogers in Thurmont is from 5 to 8:00 is December 9.  Mention the Thurmont Senior Center when ordering either at the drive-thru or inside and we will get 25% of the total sales donated to us for those 3 hours. Thank you to all those that baked and those that bought food and baked goods.  Your support is appreciated so much!

If you knit or crochet, the group may be changing to the second Tuesday of the month.  A decision will be made in time for the January issue.  Meanwhile call the center for info. Today the newborn hats were collected for the hospital for a total of 138.  (62 Christmas, 9 Thanksgiving, 67 Other). A Big Thank You to the knitters & crocheters and to the people who donated yarn to make it possible.

On Thurs., Dec. 23, at 12Noon we will have a Christmas lunch here at the center with fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy and California Blend for $6.00 ea.  Call & order a day ahead.

The center will be closed for the holidays starting on Fri. Dec. 24, 2021, reopening on Monday, January 3, 2022.

The Pauline’s Pals Monthly Craft Group will not be meeting in December, and have decided to take a break and try to start up in the Spring in April.

Be on the lookout in January for the return of BUNKO (a fast moving dice game with prizes) on Jan. 13 and FARKLE (another dice game similar to Yahtzee) on Jan. 27 both at 1:00 and both $5.00 a person to play.

For all the other events, please see the Calendar of Events in the back of this issue, TV Channel 99, the local Thurmont radio station, the sign out front or by calling the center at 301-271-7911. You can also check the schedule & menu on our website thurmontseniorcenter.org, or stop by for a copy.

The Board of Directors have just welcomed 3 new directors, Kaye Isanogle, Kathy Delauter and Angie Hamlin.  Susan Favorite was voted in as Vice President.  Roy Clever and Helen Deluca are our honorary directors giving us much appreciated knowledge, advice and history for the center.  We thank them all for accepting and serving.

Call us if you need a ride to locations in Thurmont.  We have volunteers who do this.  Call Teresa at 301-271-7911 to make arrangements and we can deliver lunches to seniors who don’t drive.  The meals are $6.00 each and come from the Mountaingate fresh every day.

We still have volunteer opportunities available, so please call Teresa to discuss them at 301-271-7911.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Y’all!
