Hello Everyone! I am so excited to tell you that after 17 months of being closed, the Thurmont Senior Center is scheduled to OPEN AUGUST 1, 2021, as long as, the COVID numbers are still low.  We have been waiting for this for a long time, haven’t we?  The Board of Directors met in June and came to a decision to have a week of special events M-F, Aug. 2 through Aug. 6, to be announced at a later date, BUT the first BINGO will be Wed. Aug. 4 at 1:00. We want this to be a week- long celebration of returning to the Thurmont Senior Center.  We won’t have restrictions, but here’s what you need to know.  We want you to do whatever makes you feel safe and comfortable.  If you want to wear a mask, please do.  If you haven’t been vaccinated please think of others and yourself and wear a mask. If you are not feeling well, please stay home, so as not to make others sick.  Also we will be asking the kitchen volunteers to please wear a mask while they are handling food.

Once we have the schedule set for August, please check on Channel 99, our website thurmontseniorcenter.org, the local Thurmont radio station, by calling the center at 301-271-7911 and the Catoctin Banner August 2021 issue & our sign out front for what we have planned for Aug. 2-6.

I want to thank the Webelos Cub Scout Pack 270 that is scheduled in June to clean out, plant and mulch our flower bed.  We really appreciate their work and for thinking of us. Also a big thank you to Ace Hardware for donating the mulch for their project.  Usually the Rocky Ridge 4-H club does this, but they have been unable to meet due to COVID.  Then in July a group from the Little League is scheduled to do some painting on the outside of the building and the outside doors so we will be all fresh and beautiful for our August opening. We thank them as well.

As far as we know, at this time our Roy Rogers fundraiser is still drive-through only, but guidelines are changing quickly so check Channel 99 or call the center at 301-271-7911.  The next one will be Thursday, July 8, from 5-8p.m. and please mention the Thurmont Senior Center.  Thank you.  Once we get the okay from Roy Rogers we plan to return to the inside bake sale, but at this time we don’t know when that will be.

Don’t forget about our Christmas Raffle which has started.  Carol has put together a “Thurmont Treasures Collection” of hand crafted items made by Thurmont seniors for first prize plus a special bonus “a Vintage Thurmont Monopoly Game.” Second prize will be $100.00 and third prize $50.00.  She will be selling them around town at different locations and here once we reopen.  They are 6 for $5.00 or $1.00 each.  You can also call the center at 301-271-7911 if you want to purchase any and we will make sure we get them to you.  It is unknown at this time if we will be having a Christmas party or not, but we will still draw the winners on the first Saturday in December which is Dec. 4, 2021.  (See the photo).

Have you taken a look at our new website yet?  It is jam packed full of information, photos, and even virtual visits that are interesting and beautiful.  Check it out at thurmontseniorcenter.org

Did you know? That once we open in August, that the Thurmont Senior Center Volunteers can deliver lunch to seniors who are unable to get out of their homes within a 6 mile radius of Thurmont.  You order 24hrs. in advance and each lunch costs $6.00 and we don’t charge to deliver it.  Call the center to arrange this at 301-271-7911.  Once we open, we can also provide rides to seniors who don’t or can’t drive within Thurmont, again call the center to arrange.

We hope everyone enjoys the July 4th celebrations, cookouts and get togethers that usually happen this time of year.  It’s so nice that we can finally gather with family and friends!  Happy Independence Day!
