• March Senior Moments

    By Kristen Campbell

May the “Luck of the Irish be with you”!” We are “March”ing into spring.  We are very excited to share that we will be re-opening March 1st.  March 1st we will be offering a free lunch, please call ahead to reserve your lunch.  We will continue the celebrations the rest of the week Bingo on Wednesday the 2nd, Ice cream social on Thursday the 3rd and a dessert social with Special music from Patty and Brent Progecene on Friday 4th all at 1:00 pm.

The Health Department has provided us with a few at home test kits for any senior that would need one and couldn’t afford to get one.

We have 5 Wednesdays this month so we will be having a special BINGO this moth and the proceeds of that will go to the Thurmont Food Bank.  We will be collecting starting the 1st of the month, non-perishable items to go along with our Bingo donation.  They are looking for personal care items (soap shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, feminine products) also cake mixes, icing. FYI they seem to have plenty of green beans and corn. Anything is always appreciated.

DID YOU KNOW?????  The Thurmont Senior Center has a Knitting and Crocheting Group.  They meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month at 11:00. They will be meeting March 8th at 11:00. They make New Born Baby Hats to give to the hospital. We are currently looking for donations of red, white and blue yarn.

Information on the hats: Hats must be soft and stretchy, and size to fit newborns: approximately 6” tall, stretching to 14” around.  Smaller sizes are also welcomed. Yarns must be as soft as possible, and, unscented. Wool is not accepted. Avoid loops that could catch small fingers. No string ties. Pompoms are okay. Directions for making the hats are available at the Senior Center.

We will be having our monthly fundraiser at Roy Roger’s on March 10, 2022 from 5 -8 pm. Come out and see us and get some delicious goodies

Last but not least I wanted to share a few words from a long time Board member and friend of the Senior Center

     Dear Friends and Fellow seniors,

It is good to have the opportunity to reminisce with you. Join me; let’s go back a few years when the TSC decided to leave the jurisdiction of the then called Department of Aging. The disagreement was over the quality of meals, but that is all in the past. After the Dept. of Aging took all of their belongings out of the center there wasn’t much left. With the help from the Town office, yard sales, auctions, donated items and the hard work of the many volunteers we were able to refurbish the center much as you see it today.  Nothing could have been accomplished without those wonderful volunteers.  Some took over the office duties and they all did a great job, but unfortunately not two used the same procedures. It soon became evident we needed a coordinator.  Roy Clever and I interviewed several pleasant ladies. The last one had such a happy face and a smile that never stopped.  Needless to say Roy and I agreed we had a winner. A winner she was and always will be. By now I am sure you know who that special person is. We had Teresa Kempsity take over the office duties and the rest is history. In the 7 plus years as the coordinator Teresa became a great asset to our center her smiling face and warm greeting made our center one of busiest in the county.  We will miss her. We wish for her all Gods blessings and look forward to her visits at the center. As soon as the center opens again make sure you come in to meet and greet Kristen, our new Coordinator. Putting it simply, we have another winner.  Look forward to that day and know that you are in good hands.  It’s been fun to share the time with you. Many thanks to you Kristen.

    Fondly, Helen Deluca

PS. Did you hear about the fellow bragging about marrying “Miss Right”, found out later her first name is “always”

Thank you for those Kind words Helen.  I do want to mention if you are interested in volunteering here at the center. We can always use help serving lunch, working Bingo or other opportunities.

As always if you have questions don’t hesitate to call us at 301-271-7911.
