Happy Fall Y’all!  Hope everyone is enjoying the cooler temperatures and changing colors of leaves.  We decided not to do our Colorfest yard sale this year, but hopefully we can do it next year.

I would like to thank Alice Eyler for doing an outstanding job as my assistant coordinator, but she has decided to step down and I would like to welcome Ruth Heaney as my new assistant coordinator.  She will officially be starting on Monday, October 4, so stop by some time and meet her.  I would like to thank all those who applied, as I had very fine applicants and it was hard to choose.

There are 3 new things this month, starting every Tuesday at 11:00 until 11:30, Ruth Heaney will be playing the piano for the seniors’ enjoyment and if anyone wants to sing they can certainly sing along and we have music with the words.  Also, on Monday, October 18th at 1:15 there is a “Songs and Stories of the Old Railroad Days” free performance here at the center by Matthew Dodd of Mechanicsburg, PA who tells stories and plays music.  On Wed. Oct. 27 we will be having a Halloween Party at 1:00 with yummy, spooky treats.  Costumes are optional so if you like to dress up please do, but if you would rather not, that’s fine too.

The knitting/crocheting group is meeting on Oct 5th the first Tuesday of the month to make baby hats to donate to the Frederick hospital OR any project you wish to work on.  If you are learning or have a problem come and maybe someone can help you figure it out.  Thank you to those that donated yarn last month.  Keep us in mind if anyone has more unused baby or regular yarn (no wool please) to donate, as they are always knitting more baby hats.

Our Bingo is October 6 and 20th this month.  Everyone is so thankful to have Bingo back at the Thurmont Senior Center.  Thanks for your participation and cooperation, it makes us happy to see you happy.  After all, this is the Happy Place as our President John Dowling says often.

If you have a birthday in October please come to the Monthly Birthday Party October 14 at 12:30.  Even if you don’t have an October birthday, come for cake & ice cream.  If you want lunch that day too, call 24 hrs. ahead and order lunch at 12:00 for $6.00.

Also on Oct. 14 is our famous bake sale and fundraiser night (always the 2nd Thursday of the month) at Roy Rogers in Thurmont from 5 to 8:00.  Mention the Thurmont Senior Center when ordering either at the drive-thru or inside and we will get 25% of the total sales donated to us for those 3 hours.  Last month we had a record breaking bake sale so come on out and see us.

The Pauline’s Pals Monthly Craft Group is meeting the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1:00.  Please sign up at the center by October 12 so they can get supplies for the Oct. 19th class.  There is a fee of $1.00 to cover the cost of the canvas.  It is a small abstract painting with fall colors.  A sample is at the center next to the signup sheet.  Call the center if you want more info. at 301-271-7911.

At this time BUNKO and FARKLE are suspended until further notice, but as soon as these fun games can be started, we will let you know.

Call us if you need a ride to locations in Thurmont.  We have volunteers who do this.  Call Teresa at 301-271-7911 to make arrangements and we can deliver lunches to seniors who don’t drive.  The meals are $6.00 each and come from the Mountaingate fresh every day.

For all the other events, please see the Calendar of Events in the back of this issue, TV Channel 99, the local Thurmont radio station, the sign out front or by calling the center at 301-271-7911. You can also check the schedule & menu on our website thurmontseniorcenter.org, or stop by for a copy.

Take care, keep smiling and hang in there.
